After a period of making Pop Realistic paintings, I found that I enjoyed painting the hair with it’s fine sinuous lines, which inspired me to make new paintings solely about hair, which eventually became more graphic.
Large scale Pop Realism paintings made during the Indie Sleaze aughts featuring artist alter ego “Angry Red” inserted into images appropriated from fashion magazines. Spray-paint stencils over the realistic paintings deface the artwork, taking the original image out of it’s natural context, of selling expensive garments to women, becoming more sexually charged while at the same time satirical. The paintings are a mixture of styles; flat versus modeled, naturalistic versus graphic questioning ideas of beauty, taste and aesthetics within art.
